Hey guys, today on the blog the lovely Ana Blaze is taking over. She’s here to talk about writing friends. Take it away Ana…

Hi Louise, thanks for having me over 🙂

Writing Friends. Get Some.

Writing, you can do it in your pajamas. That’s a big selling point really. There are huge perks to being able to work at home. No one knows if you’re having a bad hair day or if you decide to eat Cheetos and pickles for lunch. You can set your own hours and take a dancing break when you get a good review.  But it can also be lonely. Without my writing friends I’d end up talking to my cats. Okay, I already talk to my cats. But without my writing friends I’d make the cats answer me.

I also wouldn’t have a book currently available at many fine online retailers. (See how I worked that in? Clever, right?)

Writers need writing friends. We need someone who will read our early attempts and chat about character motivation and foreshadowing or tell us when the plot we’ve just described sounds exactly like a TV movie they recently saw. We need someone who will help us find the embarrassing typos in our manuscript before we send it off to a publisher and then reassure us that it’s normal to wait a long time before getting a response. When we get a rejection, we need someone who will point out that Stephen King received many rejections even though he is totally awesome.

We need someone to chat with during the day that is NOT a cat.

I’m still a newbie, but if I was going to give aspiring writers one tip, it would be this: Find yourself a couple of excellent writing friends. Share your work amongst yourselves (this needs to be a mutual thing) and be kind but honest with each other.

I happened onto a couple of the best writing friends ever well before I started submitting to publishers. Without them I wouldn’t have taken the leap and I wouldn’t have had a manuscript ready to send. The unexpected perk of signing a contract with Entranced Publishing was finding a few more. Being new, I don’t know all the norms of the industry, but it seems to me that Entranced has an especially supportive group of authors. So, if I’m giving a second tip, it’s this. If you ever find yourself in the luxurious position of choosing between publishers—choose one whose authors support each other. Why go it alone if you don’t have to?

My final note on the topic is this: Ask not what your writing friends can do for you, ask what you can do for your writing friends. Yeah, I’m a little corny. But seriously, it’s a community. You’re going to get out what you put in.

Let me tell you a little about Ana and her books, The Best Man and Mr. Right:

Ana Blaze

Ana lives just outside Washington DC with her very supportive husband and three rather demanding cats. She loves the ocean, Indian food, IKEA, and cooking. Ana admits to watching too much television and she swears that someday she’s going to learn how to play the guitar resting on the bookshelf in her office.

The Best Man

Beth Chase is too busy planning perfect weddings to worry about the lack of action in her own love life. But if she was looking for a man, she wouldn’t be looking at Colin Pratt. Her boss swears that Best Man Colin is a quiet scholar and science fiction writer who couldn’t possibly cause a fuss at his own brother’s wedding. He’s clearly never met the man in question. Snarky, sexy and more than a little inebriated, Colin is the final obstacle between Beth and the last perfect wedding she needs to make partner. Of course, when she helps him into a taxi at the end of the night she has no idea that he’s only just begun to poke holes in her professional exterior. Colin might have the skills to seduce a romance professional, but can he convince her that he’s the best man to share her happy ever after?
