Evie Shepard awakens to a nightmare. She’s been buried alive and has no idea how or why. As she struggles to remember what happened, she begins to notice changes — heightened senses, as well as increased speed, agility, and strength. And her heart no longer beats. She soon makes a disturbing discovery: she wasn’t buried alive; she was murdered. Somehow, she has come back…and she wants revenge.
Tell us about Awakenings…
Awakenings is about two sisters kidnapped by human traffickers. The elder sister, Evie, comes back from the dead to seek revenge and to find her sister.
What was the inspiration behind your story?
I always cringe when people ask this question. Not because the question is bad, but because the answer is so cliche. I had a dream about a girl clawing her way out of the ground. It was completely terrifying. The dream stuck with me, and eventually evolved into a fully fledged novel.
Tell us who your favorite character is and why?
I think people would be surprised, but my favorite character has just a tiny role. Her name is Mrs. Devuah. She is an extremely old lady with a whole lot of attitude. Everyone who has read her part, (so far) has loved her. She is slightly based off my two of my grandmothers. Tough as nails but with hearts of gold. 🙂
Does Awakenings have a playlist? What’s on it?
It does not. I really envy people who can write to music, because I’m definitely not one of them. But I think if Evie had a theme song it would be Drowning Pools Bodies. You know, the Let the Bodies Hit The Floor song. She’s pretty bad ass.
Who’s your favorite author?
That’s tough because my favorite series is the Harry Potter series however, I think Dean Koontz might be my favorite author.
What was the last book you read and loved?
That’s also tough. There has been a lot of books that I have really, REALLY, liked, but the last one I really LOVED was The Hunger Games trilogy. I think it might have ruined all other books for me.
What can we expect next from you?
A nap. Oh…bookwise? I’m working on the sequel to Awakenings plus another project. The second project will be for an older audience I think. It’s really special to me though because I put in a lot of my own experiences from a past abusive relationship.
