Instead of wearing three piece suits all day long, men would dress for business in the morning and quickly change once they returned home into more comfortable clothing. For labor workers in a uniform, many employment offices now had lockers so men could change into street clothes before heading home. Naturally on the weekends men wore casual clothing fit for whatever task they had: lounge clothes for at home, sport clothes for playing or viewing sporting events and swim clothes for the beach. None of this is new information.
While this 50s Greaser costume was worn towards the end of the decade, the s was largely about the wholesome all-American look. Although the Cold War and threat of nuclear weapons loomed over the heads of Americans during the fifties, it was a decade when the country could finally breathe a collective sigh of relief. America during the s was booming. People had more leisure time than ever before and life was pretty darn good.
Well, forget that. These picture are a far more mainstream view of how men actually dressed. Suits were cut fuller and more comfortable.
