T roye Sivan is the hottest gay pop star in the world. But Sivan is part of a complex legacy of male queerness in music, one that exploded during disco and commanded the mainstream centre in the 80s only to wither in the 90s. Why has it taken two decades for the gay male experience to reclaim its place in pop? The 80s was a perfect storm of male queerness for many reasons. The winds of the gay liberation movement had been blowing strong for a decade: queer black men such as Sylvester had been at the heart of disco and the children of Bowie were coming of age just as MTV, a new medium that valued the high-energy visuals of queer nightclubs , was launched. The number for the London Gay Switchboard was etched into the runout groove.
As part of a University project , I've been looking at homosexuality and its relationship to hip hop. But beyond these iconic figures of the 80s, how well does our assertion actually stand up? In order to try and back ourselves up with some quality data, I went on an exploration of some of the hits from yesteryear. Quality not quantity.
A gay icon is a public figure historical or present who is embraced by many within lesbian , gay , bisexual , and transgender LGBT communities. Some of the main qualities of a gay icon often include glamour , flamboyance , strength through adversity, and androgyny in presentation. Such icons can be of any sexual orientation or gender ; if LGBT, they can be out or not. Although most gay icons have given their support to LGBT social movements , some have expressed opposition , advocating against a perceived " homosexual agenda ".
