A friend of mine was once summoned into a private office by her team leader and told, gently, that the clothes she wore to the office were inappropriate. Two senior members of staff had deemed her skirts too short. Both had made complaints. She described her shock and embarrassment to us all when we met in a bar the following weekend. Naturally, we rallied round and decided her stratospheric rise from graduate trainee to senior account executive said more about her abilities than the length of her skirt. We bought a round of cocktails, hitched up our own thigh-skimmers, and thought no more of it.
Almost 10 years ago, I folded up my jeans for the final time and threw them in the bottom of my closet. And in a decade, I have done a lot. I have ridden horses bikes, and rope swings, climbed trees, fences, and ladders, sledded and snow-tubed, paint-balled, swam, hiked, and chased toddlers through jungle gyms. And I have done it all in a skirt. It seems the popular belief is, the only thing skirts are good for is tea parties.
